Pharmacist Help

Q:
My 14 year old daughter was recently prescribed Clindamycin 150MG one tab nightly for her acne; to continue for 1 month.  This seems a bit unusual to me...I know it is sometimes prescribed as a topical but I thought that other meds were usually prescribed when oral antibiotics are called for.  I am concerned that this might be too harsh of an antibiotic for her...liver issues, colitis, etc and her doctor did not mention anything about liver blood tests needing to be done while she is taking this medication.

Please provide me some actual information so I don't drive myself crazy!

Thank you so much.
A:  The dosage of Clindamycin for acne is a low dosage compared to what might be prescribed for an adult.  This prescription is needed to help reach the areas of skin where scarring might occur.  You should not worry about it unless she is experiencing some kind of side effect in which case you need to contact your physician.

Thank you for your email.  May you and your family have continued good health.

Q: My wife bought a bottle of grocery store aspirins instead of the Bayer I take once a day for blood thinning.  Is there anything special in Bayer over generic that should prevent me from taking the Bayer?
A:
Bayer Aspirin 81mg has a delayed release enteric aspirin.  It would not provide fast relief of headaches or other symptoms needing immediate relief.  The drugstore aspirin may very well be the Bayer aspirin with private labeling on it for the drugstore.  You can compare ingredients to see what differences there may be.

Acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin): Aspirin is a good example of a tradename that has entered into the language. Aspirin was once the Bayer trademark for acetylsalicylic acid.

Active Ingredients:  aspirin 81mg (acetylsalicylic acid)(acetosal)

Inactive Ingredients:

Black iron oxide
Brown iron oxide
Carnauba wax
corn starch
D&C yellow #10 aluminum lake
FD&C yellow #6 aluminum lake
hypromellose
methacrylic acid copolymer
polysorbate 80
powdered cellulose
propylene glycol
shellac
sodium lauryl sulfate
talc
titanium dioxide
triacetin
triethyl citrate

Now that I have gone over all the technical aspects, there is probably no difference between the generic aspirin or the Bayer tradename aspirin.  I take a generic one myself everyday.  I had quadruple bypass a few years ago.  Hope this helps you.

Q:
Will I experience sluggishness and/or lack of energy?
Hot flashes were never a problem.  I experienced more of the emotional roller coaster during menopause than anything.
A:
I want to congratulate you for stopping taking Prempro as your decision may avoid heart problems and blood clots.  There is now evidence Prempro does not prevent heart attacks and can actually raise triglycerides.  It does not prevent osteoporosis merely slows bone loss by 25%.

Fatigue and tiredness are usually associated with people taking Prempro.  This should go away in one to two weeks after discontinuing Prempro.

If you feel tired or fatigued, you might try the free sample offered by Lance Armstrong's company.  The product is FRS and used by cyclists for endurance and Lance used it for fatigue from his cancer.  If you want to take a look click the link below.

Thank you for your email and I wish you excellent success with your health.

Q:
COULD YOU PLEASE TELL ME IF THERE ARE ANY DRUG INTERACTIONS WHEN TAKING URICINEX?  I TAKE PLAVIX, DIOVAN, METFORMIN HCL, ALLOPURINOL , HEMOCYTE PLUS AND  81 MG ASPIRIN DAILY
I WOULD LIKE TO START TAKING URICINEX BUT WANT TO KNOW IF THERE ARE ANY DRUG INTERACTIONS IF I ADD URICINEX?
A:
Of the 4 herbs in Uricenex none of them will effect blood pressure, blood platlets, or blood thinning.  One of them, silybum marianum, may cause slight diarrhea or slight lowering of blood sugar.  However, this is rare particularly at this dose.  As you know, Metformin is usually used for maturity onset diabetes, therefore, slight lower blood sugar levels are not as critical.

Allopurinol still can be taken with Uricenex at start of therapy, but may not be needed as therapy progresses.  Unlike Allopurinol, Uricenex will also lower cholesterol.
