It’s the Holiday Season, and I have found my cinnamon apple fragrance which is my year around fragrance for every room. It comes in many containers; sprays, oils, solids, etc. The easiest to use is the spray, but it does not smell quite as good as the oil. Cinnamon is mixed with many different aromas to give us unique cinnamon aromatherapy smells. I have found apple cinnamon, lemon cinnamon, rose cinnamon, flower cinnamon, cinnamon fruit, cinnamon orange, and vanilla cinnamon.
Spice cinnamon usually comes as ground cinnamon powder form or you can get cinnamon sticks or cinnamon extract. Cinnamon is combined with vanilla, pecans, coffee, tea, nuts, fruits, almonds, walnuts, peppermint or green tea in a variety of recipes. Use cinnamon in sweet recipes for delightful desserts.
Most of the cinnamon sold as cinnamon in the United States and Canada is actually cassia sometimes labeled as “Chinese cinnamon” or “Indonesian cinnamon” referred to as ‘C. burmannii’ labeled only as ‘cinnamon’. A more expensive “true cinnamon” is the preferred form of the spice in Europe and Mexico. Cassia is produced in China, Vietnam and Indonesia. The most expensive form contains a higher oil content than the least expensive which has a lower percentage of essential oils. Saigon cinnamon commands the highest price and Indonesia cinnamon commands the lowest price.
Cinnamon uses include cinnamon benefits for health. The German Commission E monograph suggests 1/2–3/4 teaspoon (2–4 grams) of the powder per day.8 A tea can be prepared from the powdered herb by boiling 1/2 teaspoon (2–3 grams) of the powder for ten to fifteen minutes, cooling, and then drinking. No more than a few drops of volatile oil should be used and only for a few days at a time. A tincture (1/2 teaspoon or 2–3 ml) may also be taken three times per day.
Use of cinnamon to improve the action of insulin in people with diabetes has yet to be proven in clinical trials. Decreased blood glucose levels with the use of cinnamon were shown in human studies with type 2 diabetes patients. Cinnamon extracts appear to have antioxidant action. In a clinical study, significant increases in wound healing was attributed to antioxidant activity. Conflicting clinical evidence exists for the action of cinnamon on H. pylori. Laboratory tests have shown cinnamon extracts to have antimicrobial activities. Ground cinnamon (Cinnamomum Cassia) was administered at a dose of 1 to 6 g/day in a study of type 2 diabetes, and at 80 mg/day as an ethanol extract for the treatment of Helicobacter pylori, without reported side effects.
